Balderdash Basics

Dubbed by Mattel as "The Hilarious Bluffing Game," Balderdash is exactly that! It's designed for 2-6 players, and the goal of the game is for each player to get the most points by creating definitions for super-difficult words.

The more people that think your definition is correct, the more points you gain. If you're ultra-brainy and actually know the real definition of the word... all the more points for you!

Ideally you should play this game with all players being around the same age and intelligence level- that way it will be harder to tell which definition is the real one. However, it's loads of fun to NOT do this.

I remember playing with my much-younger-than-me little sister when she was about 8. Her definitions would always be the funniest because they were so far off from reality, and we all knew who had written them!

If you're playing in a group with one of the players being your spouse, I've found that it's often easy to guess which definition is theirs (think of words and sentence structures they often use, etc). Then you'll know that that definition is NOT the real one and you can avoid giving them extra points...

... how kind of you! (But it's all about winning, right?!) Ha ha!

Want to host a Balderdash party? This can be a fabulous evening as this game lends itself well to being quite social (you can chat in between rounds and it's not as fast-paced and murderous as Dutch Blitz ). However, do keep a few things in mind:

-not everyone will be into it, so make sure you have other "options" at the party, such as a movie playing in another room/area of the house

-as with any party, provide refreshments! Nothing keeps a game going like good food and drinks to stimulate the mind (especially for the men!)

-if some players aren't feeling it after a few rounds, be a good host and don't pressure them into carrying on- the quality of their definitions (and the game) will suffer

-be reasonable; don't drag the game on till 3am! Again, be a good host and signal an end to the festivities when you sense people have had enough (if they don't excuse themselves first!)
